Six
stories each with its own setup routine.
The stories are installed onto your computer so there is no need
to keep the disc in your machine. Each story is self-contained
and does not need to be read in a particular sequence. An uninstall
routine is provided for each story.
Each
story should be enjoyed, as a story. However, we have included
extra resources for the parent/home educator who wishes to extend
the educational potential of these programs.
Extra
Resources:
All
six stories in editable .doc format so you may print them out
and use as traditional books.
Adventure
record sheets, also in .doc format, for making notes of items
gained, money spent, characters met and their thoughts and observations
about them, about events and settings. Reading becomes active!
Maps
relevant to the stories as outlined below under the heading,
Maps
'Homework
/ Shared Parent activities' document as outlined below.
'Ideas
for Teachers' document as outlined below. This contains many
helpful suggestions that will help parents to get the best possible
outcome from using these programs.
Images
of the three main characters, Kern, Oss and Zaric both in colour
and in outline format. In the same formats are the dragon and
the werewolf.
UNLIMITED
SITE LICENCE USE DVD
The
following materials are included on this DVD
Pupil
versions of all six stories with unlimited use site licence.
Teacher
versions of the stories with extra navigation options:
These versions of the stories provide teachers with different
ways of accessing the story screens. This allows teachers, if
they so wish, to investigate each story's structure and sequence
of events if preparing their own teaching resources.
Hard
copy printable versions of the stories:
Each story is available as a Word (.doc) document, with illustrations,
for you to print on A4 paper. This makes them ideal for setting
ancillary or extension work. You can easily create books for
pupils to take home and practise reading with, thus involving
parents as well. And they'll never wear out because you have
the files to recreate them! Of course you can do more than just
print them out. You can print just parts of the story or edit
it to suit a particular purpose.
Adventure
Record Sheets:
The stories come with an Adventure Record worksheet. Three different
levels are provided, but these can be amended to suit pupils'
needs. Pupils use these as they read through the story - making
notes of items gained, money spent, characters met and their
thoughts and observations about them, about events and settings.
Maps:
Maps of the City of Westfort, where many of Kern's adventures
are set, can be printed in black and white. There are two A4
versions for the pupil, one with and one without a grid overlayed.
An additional map is provided for use when reading Book 4 The
Werewolf. These are excellent resources for tasks such as giving
and following directions, following instructions, using compass
points and grids, and many other cross-curricular activities.
Illustrations:
The complete range of illustrations from the six books is provided.
Navigation, spoken word and exit buttons have been removed,
as has all the text. These provide a superb resource that the
teacher should find many uses for. Additional images of the
three main characters, Kern, Oss and Zaric are provided both
in colour and in outline format. In the same formats are the
dragon and the werewolf. This collection of images provides
a major resource for the creation of worksheets, whiteboard
materials, games etc.
Homework
and Shared Parent Activities:
Suggestions are given for involving parents in using of the
'Kern the Strong' stories to help their children.
The
National Literacy Strategy:
Support activities linked to the text and sentence references
from the National Literacy Strategy to link with weekly planning
and which allow for progression and differentiation. The support
activities are divided by sentence, and text work, and structured
for each year and term.
Ideas
for Teachers:
Numerous ideas for teachers to use these resources, before,
during and after reading are provided in addition to those referenced
above under The National Literacy Strategy and Homework and
Shared Parent Activities.
Whiteboards
and Interactive Whiteboards:
The stories and their associated resources lend themselves to
use with whiteboards. Suggestions are given for this style of
approach within the teacher resources.
